Description
A magnificent and deeply characterful example of French provincial furniture making at its most accomplished, this substantial two-part buffet — known in France as a buffet à deux corps — in richly carved walnut is a supreme expression of the Louis XV provincial style as interpreted by the master craftsmen of Provence or the Rhône Valley. Carved with extraordinary skill, generously proportioned, and bearing the warm, honey-amber patina, this is a piece of exceptional quality and presence that would anchor any dining room, kitchen, or living space with effortless French grandeur.
The Upper Section
The upper corps is a tour de force of provincial carving and ingenious design. Three doors — two outer cupboards and a central compartment — are each carved with remarkable naturalistic detail. The outer doors feature beautifully shaped cartouche panels carved in high relief with flowering branches, roses, and foliage, each centered on an original shaped pewter or white metal knob pull of considerable quality and character. The central door carries a bold carved panel of wheat sheaves tied with ribbon — the classic gerbe de blé motif that is one of the most celebrated and distinctly Provençal decorative devices in French provincial furniture, symbolizing the agricultural abundance of the region.
What makes the upper section particularly special and unusual is its sliding door mechanism — the outer doors do not swing open on conventional hinges but instead slide horizontally, a practical and ingenious design feature seen on the finest examples of French provincial buffets that allowed the piece to be used in tighter spaces without doors swinging into the room. The upper section sits on the lower buffet and is removable, making transportation and installation considerably easier. The back of the upper section, visible in the photographs, confirms genuine age with honest pine secondary wood construction, chalked inventory numbers — the marks of a French house or dealer of the past — adding to its documented provenance.
The Lower Section
The lower buffet is equally impressive. Two drawers sit above two large cupboard doors, all united by the serpentine, shaped apron and facade that is the defining characteristic of the Louis XV provincial style. The drawer fronts are carved with bold floral and scroll ornament, each fitted with original shaped brass bail handles of good quality. Between the drawers, a central oval carved sunflower or chrysanthemum rosette provides a strong focal point. The two cupboard doors each carry beautifully proportioned shaped cartouche moldings, and the central stile between them bears a further carved wheat sheaf in an urn — echoing the motif of the upper section and giving the whole piece a coherent decorative programme of remarkable consistency.
The shaped apron below the doors is carved with exceptional exuberance — a central urn issuing acanthus scrolls, flowers, and foliage in bold relief that sweeps across the full width of the base. The four cabriole legs with scroll feet complete the composition with the graceful, dancing movement that is the hallmark of the Louis XV style at its finest.
The close-up photographs reveal the quality of the joinery throughout — hand-cut drawer sides with the characteristic tool marks of 18th and early 19th century French cabinet making, the secondary wood of pine and oak used throughout the carcase construction, and the original hardware in place. The back boards, marked with chalk numbers in the French tradition, confirm this piece has passed through notable hands.
