Antique English Mahogany Secretary-Bookcase with Chippendale Gothic Detail and Japanned Panels, George III Period, circa 1760–1785

$8,000.00

A monumental and rare English mahogany secretary-bookcase in three parts, combining the architectural ambition of Chippendale’s Gothic taste with exceptional decorative japanned panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl — a combination of refinement and ornament seldom encountered at this scale.

The Upper Library Cabinet presents a pair of doors centered with japanned panels on a black ground, each depicting classical architectural ruins — crumbling columns, arched gateways — set within landscapes and framed by swags of flowers and scrolling gold arabesques, with mother-of-pearl shell fragments forming the principal architectural elements and flower petals. Pointed Gothic trefoil arches in carved mahogany surmount each door panel, drawn directly from the vocabulary of Chippendale’s Director. The flanking side cabinets open independently to shelved interiors. The whole surmounted by a stepped flat cornice with reel-and-bead molding carried throughout the case.

The Secretary occupies the central section between the upper cabinet and the base, with a fall-front revealing a fitted interior of pigeon holes and small drawers above a blue-lined writing surface. The fall-front exterior panel repeats the japanned landscape treatment: a fortified castle or manor in a darkened pastoral scene, bordered by mother-of-pearl floral garlands and gold lacquer scrollwork — the Romantic picturesque aesthetic in miniature. Key included.

The Pedestal Base presents nine graduated drawers arranged in three columns flanking a central arched kneehole recess, the entire facade edged with the characteristic reel-and-bead molding. Ogee bracket feet with Gothic carved spandrels. Original brass open-work bail pulls with acanthus backplates throughout.

The flame-figured mahogany veneer retains deep, rich color consistent with age. Construction throughout in mahogany with oak secondary woods.
