Description
A rare-form 19th-century American country store or apothecary cabinet, built in pine with a case of twelve graduated drawers arranged three rows over four columns, standing on shaped, cut-out splayed feet. The old dry, worn green paint โ with an earlier red layer breaking through at the edges and high wear points โ is original to the piece and has never been stripped or refinished, giving it the honest, layered surface collectors look for in early American painted furniture.
Construction is consistent with the period: random-width, rough-sawn backboards, hand-applied with early cut nails, left unfinished on the reverse โ evidence the piece was originally built to sit against a wall, likely on a store counter or in a back room, for use as small-parts, notions, or spice storage.
Condition notes:
- Old, untouched paint surface with expected wear, chipping, and one earlier color layer visible through the green โ original surface, not restored
- Drawer knobs are later replacements (white porcelain, screw-mounted) โ not period to the piece
- Drawer interiors have been lined in black felt by a previous owner โ a later addition, not original manufacture
- Structurally sound; drawers operate; minor age-appropriate separation at case joints (see detail photos)
- Backboards rough and unfinished, as made
