Pair of Italian Gilt Iron and Marginally-Framed Wall Mirrors, Mid-20th Century, circa 1960

$685.00

A striking and decorative pair, these Italian gilt iron wall mirrors combine the exuberance of the Baroque revival with the confident metalwork tradition that flourished in postwar Italy โ€” most notably in the workshops of Florence and Rome, where artisan ironworkers produced some of the most inventive decorative furnishings of the mid-century period. Offered as a matched pair in excellent symmetry, they present a rare opportunity to acquire a cohesive decorative statement for an entry hall, dining room, or any interior that welcomes drama and warmth.

Frames & Mirror Glass

Each mirror features a rectangular frame constructed of gilt iron, finished in a warm antique gold leaf that catches light beautifully from every angle. The frames are designed in the manner of a multi-glass or marginal mirror โ€” the central plate is surrounded by a grid of smaller rectangular mirror panels set within the iron framework, creating a rich, jewel-like border of reflected light around the central glass. This device, drawing on the English 18th-century tradition of marginal-glass pier mirrors, is here executed with a distinctly Italian mid-century sensibility โ€” bolder, more architectural, and more graphic than its Georgian antecedents.

Crests

The crests are the undisputed glory of the pair. Each is formed of hand-wrought gilt iron scrollwork of great energy and confidence โ€” spiraling volutes, tapering acanthus-like spurs, and curling foliate terminals radiate outward from a central vertical finial topped with a carved and gilded rosette boss. Additional rosette medallions are applied at key junctions throughout the scrollwork, providing punctuation and richness to the composition. The overall effect is simultaneously architectural and organic โ€” a quality that places these mirrors firmly in the tradition of the great Italian ironwork designers of the postwar decades.

Condition

Both mirrors present well as a pair with good symmetry. The gilt surfaces show pleasing, even age to the finish consistent with their vintage โ€” warm and mellow rather than harsh. Mirror glass is clear and reflective with minor age-appropriate foxing. Structurally sound throughout.
