Description
A handsome example of Federal-period craftsmanship, this four-drawer chest speaks quietly but confidently to the refined tastes of late 18th-century New England. Primary wood is figured birch, whose warm honey tones and subtle flame-like grain give the piece an understated elegance that cherry or mahogany counterparts rarely achieve. Secondary woods — pine throughout the case back and drawer construction — confirm New England origin and are entirely consistent with Connecticut shop practice of the period.
Form & Proportion
The overall form is clean and rectilinear as the Hepplewhite aesthetic demands, with a gently ovolo-molded top above a well-proportioned case. The four drawers graduate in depth from top to bottom in the traditional manner, each front displaying the natural figure of the birch to pleasing effect. Cock-beaded drawer surrounds add a refined finishing detail characteristic of better Federal work.
Base & Feet
The shaped skirt is cut with a graceful multi-arch scallop — a detail seen with some frequency on Connecticut and western Massachusetts case pieces — and terminates in bracket feet of good height and presence. The feet retain their original form without evidence of restoration or replacement.
Hardware
Original brass bail pulls with oval, lightly engraved backplates are present on all four drawers, accompanied by matching keyhole escutcheons. The hardware retains a pleasing aged patina consistent with two centuries of honest use.
Construction Details
The drawer construction is exemplary and diagnostic: hand-cut dovetails at both front and rear corners are cleanly executed with the slightly irregular spacing typical of skilled hand work rather than later machine production. Drawer sides run on the case sides in the period manner. The back is composed of vertically set pine boards, hand-cut and nailed — further evidence of early hand construction.
Condition
The chest presents well overall, with a warm, mellow surface that reflects honest age and use. Minor surface wear, light scratches, and small separations consistent with more than two centuries of life are present and expected. No apparent major repairs, replacements, or structural concerns noted.
